Carriageworks To Be Consumed by Colossal Sam Whiteside Lighting Installation for Vivid Sydney 2022
Expanding its boundary-pushing line-up of music, art and performance as part of Vivid Sydney 2022, Carriageworks today announces contact – a free, large-scale lighting installation and precinct centrepiece taking over the venue from 2-11 June, alongside a rotating DJ list, paired perfectly with a curated food and drink offering from Atomic.
From 5pm, visitors to Carriageworks are invited to experience the space as never before. Created by internationally celebrated light artist, Sam Whiteside – who is also co-founder of Sydney’s experimental art and music collective, SOFT CENTRE – this brand-new commission will take over the Carriageworks Public Space, immersing Vivid-goers as they enter the venue. The monolithic lightwork will draw visitors through a dense haze and an intense column of shifting light.
contact uses algorithmically generated simulations and intense shafts of light that pulse throughout the space, as the shadows of existing architecture bend and contort around them, visitors are invited to navigate an ever-shifting distorted reality set to a multi-array drone soundscape composed and produced by Patrick Liney.
Also featured in the Carriageworks program, SOFT CENTRE will transform the entirety of the precinct into a one-day festival fusing radical electronic music, performance art and emerging technology on June 4. Set to be their largest and most ambitious event yet – SOFT CENTRE 2022 is a huge comeback after three arduous years of setbacks and no live events. Tickets are still available, here.
In a stunning addition to the already expansive music line-up, rapper singer, and cult figure of the Australia’s underground and heavy music scene, Zheani will support Estonian artist and rapper TOMM¥ €A$H for his only Sydney show at Carriageworks.
Zheani’s music has endeared her to hundreds of thousands of fans and led to the kind of audience that’s unheard of for DIY and underground artists in Australia: 175,000 monthly listeners on Spotify; millions of views on YouTube; and hundreds of thousands of social media followers.
For hungry punters looking for a pre-show feed, local award-winning brewpub, Atomic, will be serving hopped-up beers and tequila-based cocktails in a pop-up bar throughout the duration of Vivid Sydney at Carriageworks. Plating up teriyaki-glazed pork bao buns, turmeric and kaffir lime infused sausage rolls, spicy fries, and more, the entire venue will transform into an immersive feast for the senses, with live bands, art installations, performance art, as well as a rotating line-up of local DJs performing across six epic nights.
New DJ acts joining the line-up as part of a free program include Body Corp; Cousin; Flower Boy; Salllvage; Stereogamous and Vibe Positive.
General tickets are still on sale for the wider Vivid Sydney music program at Carriageworks, curated by Tom Supple, via https://carriageworks.com.au/events/vivid-sydney-22/

About Sam Whiteside:
Through Whiteside’s large site-specific installations, he uses light to construct ephemeral architecture allowing the viewer to navigate an ever-shifting distorted reality. Using scale and repetition these works build complex geometry and structures purely from light. Throughout his career, he has collaborated with some of Australia’s largest performers, artists and events, his works have been featured at Sydney Opera House, Dark Mofo and Carriageworks. Founded in 2017, Soft Centre is a multi-award-winning festival of dark abstraction, where experimental music, radical performance art, large-scale installations and new media works intersect. As a co-director and curator, Whiteside works closely with a plethora of artists producing artworks, installations and cross-disciplinary collaborations.
