Slumberjack
The Tarago is packed and this dynamic duo is ready to kick start their Autumn 2015 tour which will take them around the country. Going by the motto we usually sleep but sometimes make music these producers are one act to keep an eye out on in 2015. Morgan Then & Fletcher Ehlers complete a quick Q&A with Across The Ocean ahead of their tour.
What is the latest for Slumberjack?
At the moment we’re just getting things ready for tour which kicks off in about a week. We’re super excited to get back on the road, it’s been quite a while! We’re also working on our next EP which is really, really enjoyable – can’t get enough of writing music!
Is it an exciting time seeing that the profile of the band is starting to grow?
Yeah! We’re super humbled to be in the position we are and glad that there are people out there who want to listen to the music we’re making. Being able to play the music we love to people who want to hear it is the greatest feeling.
How did the band get together?
We met about 2 years ago and jumped into the studio just wanting to have a bit of fun – we ended up really clicking and after a couple of sessions decided to drop our old projects and focus solely on Slumberjack.
Is there anything significant about the band name?
It was actually supposed to represent the more chilled out music we started making in the beginning. Things changed pretty quickly though….
How would you describe the band’s sound?
I would describe our sound as a ying/yang mixture of beautiful and dark. We really like juxtaposing moods, emotions and soundscapes. We are definitely into world music sounds and use a lot of those textures in our tracks too.
Do you think it has evolved/changed much since you started out?
We took a long time to find our “sound” and even now we’re constantly trying to challenge ourselves to push the limits with the types of sounds and palettes that we’re using. To us, it’s all about constantly evolving and keeping people on their toes.
Where do you think the next EP/album will take you?
Not going to lie, we always have high hopes with whatever we put out. But we are also just grateful with our fans telling us they enjoy our music. Hopefully it will take the project up another notch so we can keep doing what we do and enjoy it.
What bands collectively do you look up to for inspiration?
Hiatus Kaiyote, Linkin Park, Beltaine, The Script etc. We can’t really pinpoint a specific group to be honest, it’s usually what piques our fancy.
What can punters expect on this tour? Any surprises?
We will be testing a couple (or a lot) of new demos out. As per usual, we like to keep our sets highly energetic and fast paced. We can’t let you know too much, then it wouldn’t be a surprise would it?
Playing in Bali must be exciting?
Yeah! We can’t wait to go and hang out with everyone there, the vibe is going to be awesome and the lineup for the show has a lot of our favourite artists on it.
What’s the plan beyond this tour? What’s the next big challenge for Slumberjack?
We are toying with the idea of a live show. It’s going to be pretty challenging because we have a very different expectation and approach to run a live show and still be as engaging and versatile as a DJ set.
