Full Flower Moon Band New Album “After Dark”

Full Flower Moon Band, the hypnotic art-rock outfit led by Kate ‘Babyshakes’ Dillon, return today with ‘Endless Summer’, a brand-new single and video, and the first taste of their fourth album After Dark, out February 26 via Impressed Recordings.

Don’t let the title fool you. ‘Endless Summer’ is a much darker anthem than it lets on. “Endless Summer is the voice of a manic episode,” says Dillon. “This hopeless, frantic optimism is summarised in the chorus lyric: ‘you can have an endless summer, anytime the sun comes out’. What began as a simple instrumental track is now unleashed onto the world as an unnerving battle cry.“

The accompanying video mirrors that push and pull. Stark black and white footage of life in New York captures the city at its darkest, broken up by flashes of vibrant live performance and snapshots of Dillon performing as a child. It’s the song’s tension playing out on screen, the girl who first took the stage and the woman who owns it now, all blurring together. “It gives me the feeling of being nostalgic for something that happened only moments ago,” Dillon says. “When life’s highs and lows move so quickly, you end up feeling nothing at all. That emotional distance feels connected to the cynicism at the heart of the song.“

After Dark was written over a single month in New York, after Dillon was awarded Q Music’s Grant McLennan Fellowship. Alone in a city that never switches off, she turned the lens on herself. Everything she’d built was still there, real and alive. She wasn’t looking to walk away from it, just asking whether it still served her, or whether she’d been surviving inside it to keep everyone else happy.

After Dark isn’t about reclaiming anything, because nothing was taken. It’s about permission to imagine again, something Dillon gave up somewhere along the way in service of the collective. This record is her stepping into what’s next.

Full Flower Moon Band are one of Australia’s most electric and unrelenting rock outfits, a Brisbane five-piece who started life as Dillon’s bedroom project. Their third album Megaflower(2024) debuted at #1 on the ARIA Australian Album Chart, sold out its first vinyl pressing in a week and took home The Triffid’s Album of the Year.

Iggy Pop has spun ‘Roadie’ and ‘Illegal Things’ on his BBC Radio 6 Music show, while Double J, triple j, KEXP, PBS, 2SER and 4ZZZ have all backed the band. Their songs have been synced on Made in Chelsea (‘Man Hands’) and Netflix’s Heartbreak High (‘Trainspotting’), and a string of viral videos clocking millions of views has drawn fans including Jack Black, Fred Durst, Miguel, Noel Fielding, Sleaford Mods, and Cage The Elephant.

But to really understand Full Flower Moon Band, you have to see them live. When Dillon steps on stage, something takes hold of her. It’s less a gig than a ceremony, the band locked in behind her while she’s pulled somewhere the rest of the room can only follow. NME calls her “an arresting, hip-swivelling leader”, and anyone who’s been in the crowd knows the feeling of watching someone possessed by the music. “People comment that I’m a completely different person on stage,” she says. “Well baby, it’s a show. Let’s go.”

This November, that ceremony moves into stadiums when the band support Foo Fighters at their Brisbane and Townsville shows, bringing new material and fan favourites to their biggest stages yet.
