Hayden Calnin – “Oh, Hunter”
Oh Hunter is the hypnotic second EP from 24 year old Melbourne singer/songwriter Hayden Calnin.
From it’s commencement to it’s ending it is a mesmerising journey, harmoniously marrying ambient soundscapes with Hayden’s melancholy lyrics.
“Break down on your knees and drown” are the opening lyrics from the first track Coward, which sets the tone for the entire EP. A haunting piano leads us into track 2 Comatose and by now one is well and truly immersed in this collection of dark and beautiful songs. The instrumentation backing the strong writing comes in layers of minimalistic guitars and electronic flourishes over sparse beats. A headphone listen is highly recommended, with a clever use of panning adding an extra dimension to the experience.
Vocally, Hayden Calnin will always get the inevitable Bon Iver comparisons, especially in regards to his impressive falsetto, but there is denfinitely enough originality for this work to stand alone.
Overall “Oh Hunter” is a quality collection of 5 heartfelt tunes and is an EP which would go rather nicely with a glass of red on a bleak winter’s day.
