The Grand Rapids – ‘Copper Girl’ + Tour Announced
Since the release of their debut and justly lauded album ‘Great Shakes’ in 2013, The Grand Rapids have been brewing their next piece of work.
Drawing from a diverse range of influences The Grand Rapids produce a sound that is well developed: expansive and bold, with swirling walls of reverb driven guitar.
Convened in 2007 out of a love for fuzzy, heavy 60s, by vocalist Sasha L Smith and lead guitarist Daniel Hallpike, they soon after introduced Keith Ratnan on drums and Deon Salviero on bass. This 7-inch release is taken from The Grand Rapids’ new yet to be named album, and is a look at what’s to come from the psychedelic fuzz rockers.
The A Side – “Copper Girl” – is skilfully executed psychedelic rock. Smith’s brawling vocal and 80s post punk dramatics shines amongst the droning wall of guitars, and bright solos burn over the lumbering beats. Copper Girl is a tale of obtaining the unobtainable; with hints of The Byrds, The Brian Jonestown Massacre and those who follow threaded into the tapestry.

In contrast, the B Side – “Vesuvian Love Song” – is stripped back and slightly eerie, with Smith’s vocal providing the music its intensity. Sweetly mysterious and subtly menacing, Smith’s haunting vocal, synthesizers and acoustic guitar transports the listener through the songs dark landscape.

The Grand Rapids look to expand upon the sound established by their maiden effort and together, these two uniquely contrasting tracks provide an exciting glimpse into the range and depth of material that awaits the listener on their forthcoming album.
“Copper Girl” was recorded at Newmarket Studio and mixed Sing Sing Studios by Callum Barter (British India, Fraser A Gorman). “Vesuvian Love Song” was recorded at Crosstown Sound studio, by Josh Whitehead. Both tracks were mastered by David Briggs (The Little River Band).
The Grand Rapids will hit the road this August and September in support of the 7” release.
