Strung Out

If you’re a Strung Out fan there’s lots to get excited about according to front man Jason Cruz as they prepare to head to Australia to headline Hits & Pits. The band’s forthcoming album Transmission Alpha Delta is due in September and a DVD is slated for release this year and if fans are lucky they may get a preview of the new material when they play near you.

Are you looking forward to headlining the Hits & Pits festival?

I think it has been three years since we’ve done an actual tour but it is always nice to come back to Australia. There’s no pressure and I’m looking forward to having some fun and I can’t really think of it any other way. We’re always trying to play the best we can and hang out with all of my friends, it will be rad.

Will fans be treated to any new tunes off the forthcoming album Transmission Alpha Delta?

We might play a couple new songs but its hard busting out new songs that fans haven’t heard before or kills the momentum of a show usually. It tends to throw people off but we may bust out a couple as we’ve been working really hard on these. They’re going to be on another level and sometimes it’s best to wait for the record to come out and let it sink in.

Is it close to being finished?

We have a little way to go and we resume tracking on June 1st right when we get home from Australia and then we’ll be shooting for a September 3oth release.

What can fans expect from the new album?

It’s us five guys you know and love and it has been five years since our last record. A lot has happened to us in that time and before we were keeping on a two year schedule no matter what come rain or shine. This one we went off and lived life a little bit and we all experienced some crazy stuff. This record will definitely be a different band I can tell you that.

When you say a lot has happened in the band what do you mean?

Its life you know! Things happen in life, getting older is one of them but isn’t a big issue. Being in a band you get better and find a more concise way of saying what you want to say and your ability doesn’t dictate your imagination anymore. You reach a point where you can pull off whatever you try and that’s a good thing.

You touched on being older and given that the life blood of the band is touring does it make it harder balancing life at home versus making an income?

It does definitely, but consider the average husband/father who works forty to eighty hours a week he’s probably gone more than if I left for four to six months of the year. It’s just how we make our living and is what we do. Families always come first so you do the best you can.

Has much thought been given to how the new album is going to be released given that most people are into the digital age now?

There’s been a lot of thought, a lot of talk and forward thinking. I’m a big vinyl fan and I believe in creating a package for fans. I’m creating two paintings a month until the record comes out and each painting is going to represent a song. I want to be able to give something to the fans which is more than just a digital download code or something off their iPhone. It is so easy you take it for granted the process of making the music and I think people take it for granted how easy it comes, where it comes from and hard it is to make so I would like to glorify the process a lot more with this painting series. We have the DVD coming out about the past and the recording coming out September so I’ll reveal the vinyl painting a month before it comes out and the final painting will be the cover. I want it to be more of a experience.

Does it bring back a lot of good memories looking back at all the old footage?

It does but I don’t remember things well and things happen so fast and so much happens it took me looking through all these video files to remember eighty percent of what I’ve been through. It is easy to forget how much you accomplish sometimes and makes you look at the future a bit differently.
