Yours & Owls Festival 2023 Party With A Purpose, Y + O Sustainability Upgrade!

Yours and Owls have consistently evolved our sustainability practices year after year to ensure we continue to reduce our environmental impact via our Party With A Purpose initiatives.

In 2023, thanks to the permanent structures within our new festival home at the University Of Wollongong, we are once again upping our game!

This year we are transitioning to electrification via clean renewable energy sources where possible by utilising the existing power on-site at UOW, a large amount of which is solar power. We will be contributing towards solar upgrades that will supply solar energy to the UOW UniBar year-round, greening up gigs at the UniBar! This contribution equates to roughly 62 kWh, which in turn would produce approximately 82,500 kWh per year. To put it in perspective, an average household consumes about 6,000 kWh per year.

Each year, as the festival grows, these additional solar panels will be directly powering important areas of the Yours and Owls Festival site, including stages, with the long-term aim to have the majority of the event powered purely by renewable energy sources.

Alongside our 2023 Sustainability Partner BetterCup, we will be eliminating all single-use plastic beverage containers. The BetterCup system enables punters to return or swap their cup, which is then returned to the BetterCup Warehouse, washed and shipped out to the next sustainable festival.

We are also eliminating plastic water bottles, so we encourage you to BYO water bottles, empty on entry, with refill water stations peppered throughout the site.

Introducing the VIPoo experience! A prototype of portable waterless toilets at the Metropolis Locale that turn human waste into fertiliser for growing food and reduce the festival’s carbon footprint by eliminating wastewater, sewerage and chemical treatment. One person’s waste is a gardener’s treasure!

We will be minimising waste going to landfill by sorting waste into clean waste streams on site. Plastics, cardboard and aluminium will be recycled, and food waste will be composted. This effort means we can continue to work towards our goal of keeping 90% of waste out of landfill.

Official 2023 Yours and Owls Festival merch will be printed on organic, ethical, climate-neutral clothing products so you can feel good about your new threads too!

Capturing data to record waste production and water and energy consumption so we can work out our carbon footprint and implement new processes that help us reduce our impact on the earth, year on year.

Yours and Owls is partnering with Peloton for Plastic and Wollongong City Council’s Rise and Shineprogram to help clean up our coastline on International Coastal Clean-up Day, Saturday, 16^th September. Moshtix is the only authorised ticket seller for Yours and Owls and all tickets must be purchased through Moshtix to be valid at the gate. Fans will be able to control their tickets via their Moshtix account which will include the ability to change the name on the ticket, resell their ticket (via private link), resend their tickets to themselves and access Moshtix Fan Experience.
