Cold Specks – ‘Absisto’
Absisto: “the Latin verb for withdraw or depart”
Cold Specks is the musical project of Canadian singer-songwriter Al Spx. ‘Absisto’ is the first single from her sophomore LP “Neuroplasticity” due for release August 22 – the follow up to her highly acclaimed 2012 debut “I Predict A Graceful Expulsion”.
Spx describes ‘Absisto’ as one of the “more unusual songs on the record”. The minimalist and eclectic musical arrangement slowly fosters throughout the track, starting with near-white noise, and culminating in an all-in instrumental break down in the bridge. Combined with her soulful vocal, ‘Absisto’ is a demanding first single.
On top of being shortlisted for the Juno Award and Polaris Prize, recently Spx has been pinballing between an enviable roll call of collaborators. She worked on Moby’s album, was invited to play with Joni Mitchell at the singer’s 70th birthday alongside the likes of Herbie Hancock, contributed to Ambrose Akinmusire’s new record and also Swans’ album “To Be Kind”. Both Akinmusire and Swans frontman Michael Gira return the favour on “Neuroplasticity”.
“…as Spx sings throughout the powerful track, in her fantastic signature howl, “Simmer down, settle in,” it becomes clear that maybe she is talking to us, trying to get us ready for what’s to come.” – The Needle Drop
