Kayps Releases Highly Anticipated Album ‘Bunuba Baby’

Since his debut in 2021, it was evident that a wealth of potential was always at the heart of KAYPS’ music and brand of storytelling. Now based in Perth/Boorloo, KAYPS has struck out as a leader of a new generation of rappers pushing Indigenous culture and contemporary influences into new territory.

With the release of his much anticipated album BUNUBA BABY, the listener gains new insight into the journey of one of Australian hip hop’s most exciting names – one that is still being uncovered. Featuring previous singles like ‘SHIPS’ (featuring FLEWNT and JJ VACANT) and ‘765’, the album is a poignant portrait of a young person navigating growth in their cultural and personal identity.

Showcasing KAYPS’ personal side, BUNUBA BABY speaks to his relationship with his culture; the confusion, anger and frustrations of being mixed race and coming to terms with the fact that ultimately, it’s all okay. Powerful album moments manifest across the project in songs like ‘RUN BOY RUN’, ‘BROKEN GLASS’ and ‘CROCODILES’, with KAYPS masterfully redefining his talents as a storyteller and emcee with each turn.

BUNUBA BABY has not simply been a musical endeavour for the Walmatjarri/Bunbuba artist; it has been a way to further embrace his connection to community and family, while also acknowledging some of the challenges that come with growing up distanced from culture; realising the steps that need to be taken in order to reconnect in adulthood.

“The process of creating this project was closer to a soul searching journey than anything else. When I initially put forward the idea of making this project, I knew I had wanted to do this for years prior but it felt like the perfect time to be able to take myself on that journey and really invest time into diving into my family heritage and culture.”

“I so clearly remember the first session we started for this project and the intro of the album “COME HOME”, which was actually the first track we made. As soon as I heard the chords laid down to establish the sonic direction of the album, I knew it was going to be the most vulnerable and personal piece of work I had ever written. Over 18-24 months later, I couldn’t be any more proud of this project. The response from my family was incredible which gave me great hope that I had done my story and my family’s story justice.”

Tackling the project with bold ambition and the ability to embrace being vulnerable at the same time, KAYPS presents a body of work that he can not only be proud of, but showcase as true sense of self as his profile within the music space continues to rise.

To date, his music has struck a chord with a growing fanbase around Australia, largely due to his passionate delivery, as well as notable shows supporting the likes of KNEECAP, Denzel Curry, Sudan Archives, South Summit and more. KAYPS’ signing with Bad Apples Music this year was another strong step forward for the MC and producer, further cementing his place as one to watch; ultimately providing a supportive environment for these stories heard on BUNUBA BABYto grow.

To mark the release of BUNUBA BABY, fans can see KAYPS taking the album on the road to venues in Sydney, Melbourne, Albany, Margaret River, Perth and Broome throughout August, September and November.

“I am unbelievably excited to bring this project on tour, it’s such a great opportunity to tell my stories that come from my family who live in a town that the majority of people have never heard of. It’s an opportunity for me to connect with people on a more personal level where I haven’t been able to previously.
