Josh Pyke New Album”Kingdom Within”
For over two decades, Josh Pyke has been the architect of a signature sound in Australian music. The acclaimed, award-winning singer-songwriter has proven time and again that his intimate, nuanced storytelling style is timeless.
Seven studio albums, a lauded career as a multi-talented artist across the realms of music, film and TV composition, as well as children’s books, have given Pyke the opportunity to push himself creatively through many ventures and in 2026, he is ready to reveal his next project: Kingdom Within.
Kingdom Within, Josh Pyke’s eighth studio album, is career-defining, with clear messaging and emotion driving each song. His first independent release since 2004, this is an album to embrace as a salve, an opportunity for the listener to disengage from the turbulence of our current existence and instead find themselves enveloped in rich sonic textures, beautiful harmonies and above all, Pyke’s best lyricism to date.
Recent years have seen Pyke’s attract a new generation of younger fans, who are finding their gateway to his catalogue through the seminal hits, deep album cuts and the poignant moments of storytelling that have defined his recent history. In a similar way to peers including Paul Kelly and Missy Higgins, the engagement of these younger fans with Pyke’s music plays beautifully into this fresh, elevated stage of his career.
As Pyke anticipates a brand-new chapter for himself, the creation of Kingdom Within has repositioned his perspective on what it means to be an artist with a platform to build community based around a shared love of music.
This desire to form sustainable relationships and connections extends beyond music, with Pyke’s philanthropy manifesting itself in different roles and initiatives; from the Josh Pyke Partnershipin collaboration with APRA AMCOS, to creating Busking For Change with the Indigenous Literacy Foundation, and sitting as the Chair of the PPCA, as well as numerous public speaking engagements where he has advocated for independent artists and their journeys.
Working with long-time friend and colleague, but first-time production collaborator, ARIA-winning producer Chris Collins, Pyke was able to create a body of work that sees him lean into the unknown, stripping away some of his usual creative demo processes, so both he and Collins could bring the music to fruition largely from scratch in the studio.
For the first time in his career, Pyke handed the production responsibilities to Collins, an incredible musician and producer who has been in Pyke’s orbit for many years, first as a guitar tech, then as a band member. Says Pyke of their collaborative partnership, “I have enough confidence in my songwriting now to relinquish control to somebody who I love and trust, who I know has my best interests, not only as a person, but as a songwriter in mind.”
“It’s different when you’re a 48-year-old artist making an album, as opposed to being a 20-year-old doing it,” he muses. “With this record, I didn’t necessarily know what I wanted, but I knew what I didn’t want. It’s all based on instinct.”
Another key collaboration on this album comes with the appearance of Missy Higgins on the single Won’t Be Heavy. An older composition of Pyke’s, the song almost didn’t make it to the studio until the idea of a duet began to take form. The contrast between the artists’ voices and the warm nature each brings to the track exemplifies their strengths; as individual performers, Higgins and Pyke are a perfect fit.
“I emailed her and she said yes straight away,” Pyke says. “I recorded it at home and sent her the rough demo. She nailed it and added these extra vocal lines at the end, which remind me a bit of Cat Power. She brought the yin to the yang I had.”
The tapestry of Kingdom Within weaves together stories of searching: searching out moments of peace, moments of fulfilment, and moments of redefining oneself as we navigate life’s many chapters and arcs.
Sonically, the album feels equal parts nostalgic and current, with Pyke’s signature blend of folk and indie melodies coming together with a wiser perspective on life and the industry he inhabits.
The album anchor is the title track, Kingdom Within, setting the tone for the whole album early in the piece for Pyke and Collins.

Lyrically, Pyke describes the track simply yet effectively, “The idea of trying to find your kingdom within, in a world that seems fractured and fragmented. I have such cognitive dissonance about everything that’s going on in the world at the moment,” he says. “This song sums it all up; it sums up the message I’m trying to remind myself of, as much as anyone else.”
Similarly, songs like You’re Doing Better Than You Think You Are provide Pyke with unique avenues to offer his audience moments of reassurance through music. A longtime advocate for artists and those in the arts industry, Pyke’s words here, married with beautiful arrangement and production, feel instantly grounded and weighted in lived experience as a musician, but also as a husband and father trying to make sense of the craziness dominating our newsfeeds and daily lives.
“This is the message everyone needs to hear right now. Including myself,” he admits. “It’s a weird time right now, but I think we’re all doing better than we think we are. We have to take a step back and remember that every now and then. I find it uncomfortable to write direct lyrics, but this is something I feel is important to say. I wanted the music to be joyful, ragged, and a bit cathartic. I’ve got my family singing on this at the end as well. For me, allowing myself to get caught up in this sort of emotion is what it’s all about.”
More than ever, Pyke steps into 2026 excited about where the road will take him next with music and his ever-growing fanbase. Throughout his career, Pyke has created music that has impacted fans from all backgrounds, at different stages of their lives.
If Kingdom Within unveils anything, it’s that core memories are formed from a myriad of experiences that are largely out of our control. What we can control is how we respond, both emotionally and with our actions. This album is a testament to navigating such experiences, good and bad, to ultimately arrive at a place of understanding and acceptance.
“I think this is my best album,” Pyke says. “As a body of work, it feels complete. It’s the beginning of a new chapter of independence for me, and it’s incredibly exciting and freeing to think about what that might lead to in the future.”
