Sarah Blasko To Play Intimate Sydney Show To Raise Funds For Refugee Council Of Australia
In response to last week’s announcement by the Federal Government that all funding to the Refugee Council of Australia (RCOA) would be axed as part of the recent budget, Sydney based singer songwriter Sarah Blasko will be performing an intimate show at The Giant Dwarf, Redfern, Sydney on World Refugee Day – Friday June 20th with all proceeds going to the RCOA.
For 33 years, the Refugee Council of Australia has worked hard to be a strong and credible community voice for the humane treatment for people seeking asylum. The situation for people seeking refuge protection has never been as dire as it is now and never has there been a greater need for the Refugee Council’s work.
Paul Power, Chief Executive of the RCOA told ABC radio, “It seems extraordinary that our organisation – which has been doing this work through thick and thin for 33 years – has been singled out for this treatment. This in many ways illustrates the state of the relationship between the non-government sector – particularly organisations working on asylum issues – and the government at the moment.”
Sarah Blasko said this morning -“I’m emerging from what I’ll affectionately call my ‘fifth album writing cave’ to play this special show at the Chaser’s Giant Dwarf Theatre during Refugee Week. I’m an ambassador this year & The Refugee Council need financial support now more than ever to continue their positive work within refugee communities in Australia. They are also an important force in lifting the veil on our country’s treatment of asylum seekers. So, come watch me sing for the night & you’ll be supporting them. I promise at least one new song & special guests”.
Having released her grandest record yet, ‘I Awake’, in 2012, Sarah is currently writing for her fifth solo record.
Sarah will be performing a stripped back set featuring some surprise guests.
Tickets are available from www.giantdwarf.com.au/tickets.
