Things Of Stone And Wood Team Up With Babaganouj For “Happy Birthday Helen” Cover

With Things Of Stone and Wood currently on tour celebrating their 20th Anniversary for hit single “Happy Birthday Helen”, and self-confessed TOSAW super-fans Babaganouj just wrapping up their East Coast dates and gearing up to release some new material, no one would expect these two bands to ever cross paths.

It all started when Brisbane’s Babaganouj played a set of covers at a local monthly 90’s night and word began to spread that their rendition of “Happy Birthday Helen” was a hit. Phone calls were made, conversations had, and both bands decided to meet when Things Of Stone and Wood played Brisbane earlier this month.

Babaganouj had been doing a lot of driving long distances – driving to Sydney, driving to Melbourne, driving to… Roma? So we needed some music to listen to. Happy Birthday Helen turned out to be out most rotated song on our most rotated Australiana playlist. It’s a song from my childhood, one I don’t remember, but a song feel like I always knew. It’s a very earnest song, and very Melbourne, but we now consider it a classic of our own.
